Program Overview

The Village Pot Initiative is a resource-sharing program that involves the full spectrum of community members and organizations in support of VOICES' mission.  Our Village Pot Community partners play a critical role in our success. Community partners act as a resource hub for V4C:CAT teams, to cover the costs associated with the VTI Community-based fellowship and also help fund our special projects. The second oldest initiative, the Village Pot Institute (VPI) was launched  shortly after the V4C:CAT team, with the objective of gaining the support and involvement of local businesses’ in the program. Our First VPI partner in Ghana, S.C. Johnsons, a global manufacturer of household cleaning supplies, to date continues to contribute significantly to the future of the organization not only through financial support but also in its governance with representation on VOICES Ghana’s Board of Directors.

Thecontinued presence of the V4C:CAT Teams over the last seven years is largely credited to this Initiative, which works intimately with us to provide resources. This active support has resulted in over 150 school children between the ages of 9 to 16 years old, participating in awareness-raising campaigns and development initiatives on issues such as sanitation, discrimination against the mentally ill, and peace-building. These successes lie not only in the capacity and creative will of the youth participants, but also in the partnerships inherent to our VPI partners, who include a wide spectrum of organizations like UNICEF Ghana, S.C. Johnson Wax, Ghana Commercial Bank, Kofi Annan Center for Excellence in IT, Tropic Pharmacy Osu, Promasidor (Cowbell) Ghana Ltd, Kingdom Books Ghana Ltd, S.I.F.E and Ghana Cyberspace Ghana Ltd & Back up & Byte Management Services. These partners commit to assisting PHC members by providing resources such as learning spaces, technical expertise, financial support, and community goodwill.

Program Implementation

The main objective to location scouting is to acquire knowledge about the types of businesses located near each participating PHC school; and to identify the key community members who should be invited to participate in the Village Pot.When local business scouting is complete, introductory letters are printed and delivered to the identified businesses. It is at this stage that managers, business owners and other administrative staff are given a brief introduction to PHC and VPI. A follow up meeting is scheduled at which point a conversation and relationship begins. This often results in support that comes in kind of in the form of a financial donation. Always, it leads to the overall involvement of community members in the empowerment of their youth, helping us as an organization to achieve one of our ultimate goals of showing that the capacity of young people is inherent, should be enabled and can add value to the culture.

Program Evaluation

The purpose of the VPI evaluation is to focus the impact, process, performance and/or cost of the community's role in the program. VPI Evaluations are categorized into four major types:

Through these ongoing processes, The Village pot is constantly monitored and evolves to meet the evolving needs of the organization.

I think supporting PHC will add a good value to the community. I am now seriously considering supporting the PHC program in my community.”  -Gas Station Owner in Nima District

“I greatly appreciate VOICES’ effort in our community because education is one of the major contributions to my town. After attending the VOICES program, children are now more motivated and excited about going to school. I am a strong supporter for VOICES community work” -Abdul Majeed, Assemblyman of NIMA
